Heavy rainfall across Indonesia’s Central Java region has triggered multiple landslides, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread damage. The most severe event occurred in Cibeunying village in the Cilacap area, where a large slope failure buried numerous homes beneath deep layers of soil and debris. Search teams reported burial depths ranging from three to eight meters, which created challenging working conditions and slowed rescue efforts. Sixteen fatalities have been confirmed in Cilacap, with several individuals still reported missing.

A second landslide struck Banjarnegara, resulting in two confirmed deaths and dozens missing. Approximately thirty houses and surrounding agricultural areas have been destroyed. Excavators, tracking dogs, aerial drones, and manual excavation teams have been mobilized to support ongoing search operations. Authorities have emphasized that extreme rainfall linked to the region’s wet season has increased the likelihood of slope failures across mountainous and rural terrain.

Indonesia’s wet season typically extends from September through April, bringing a heightened risk of hydrometeorological hazards. Meteorological officials have warned that continued intense rainfall may lead to further landslides in vulnerable areas. With many communities located in steep, erosion-prone environments, persistent rainfall continues to place residents, infrastructure, and transport routes at elevated risk.
