A severe landslide in Sri Lanka’s Central Province has resulted in the deaths of four people, according to the country’s Disaster Management Centre. The event occurred when a slope above a small roadside shop failed during prolonged rainfall, sending soil and rock directly onto the structure and several nearby vehicles. Four additional individuals were injured and transported to hospital. Search and rescue operations continue as officials warn that more victims may still be trapped beneath the debris. Traffic along the Colombo to Kandy main road has been heavily restricted as a safety measure.
Authorities have issued landslide warnings for seven districts due to ongoing rainfall that has saturated slopes, increased pore water pressures and reduced shear strength in susceptible soil layers. The Kadugannawa area has been identified as particularly vulnerable to rockfalls and earth slips.

The Sri Lankan incident forms part of a broader pattern of destructive landslides across Southeast Asia during the current rainy season. Indonesia has recorded at least eighteen fatalities across multiple events in Central Java, with deep burial depths complicating recovery efforts. In Vietnam, a bus travelling through Khanh Le Pass was struck by a rainfall-triggered landslide, resulting in six deaths and nineteen injuries. These incidents reinforce the increasing frequency and severity of rainfall-induced slope failures reported throughout the region.
