A little girl died and 4 members of her family were injured after a rockfall was triggered in Glacier National Park, located on the Canada–United States border in Montana.
The incident occurred on August 12, 2019. The family members were traveling by car across the Going-to-the-Sun Road when rock debris hit the top of their vehicle.
The unfortunate girl died after suffering crucial injuries. Due to her critical condition, she could not be airlifted and she finally passed away while being transferred to a local hospital. Her parents and 2 other children were also hospitalized. "The two adults suffered significant bruises and were transported to area hospitals. The two other children in the vehicle had minor injuries and also went by ambulance to the hospital", Glacier National Park, stated.
According to Park officials, the rockfall's volume could fill a truck's bed and the maximum size of the fragments was about 40 centimeters. "The park extends its deepest condolences to the girl’s family, and thanks its partner emergency care providers for the significant response", the park's release states.
Authorities closed the road at the same night to remove the debris and the vehicle.
An internet page was created to raise a fund for the girl's funeral. The total cost is estimated at $20,000 and according to updates, more than $11,000 had been raised by August 16. “Any extra money will be given to the family to supplement their income allowing them the time they need as a family. Every little bit helps.”, is denoted in the website.
