Intense monsoon rainfall has triggered widespread landslides throughout Nagaland, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture. In one of the most critical incidents, a 50-meter stretch of National Highway 2 collapsed near Phesama village, adjacent to Kisama Heritage Village in Kohima district. The highway, which connects Nagaland to Manipur, was entirely severed after the ground subsided by approximately four feet and then gave way. At the height of the event, multiple trucks fell from the cliff’s edge into the debris zone below, as seen in visuals captured from the site. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Emergency Response and Connectivity Challenges
Following the collapse, over 100 goods-laden trucks were stranded. While no passenger injuries were recorded, the loss of cargo and disruption to supply chains was significant. District authorities have opened a single-lane alternate route for light vehicles, while planning is underway for a temporary bypass road. Officials noted that construction could be completed within ten days, depending on weather and land access from local stakeholders. A long-term alternative route has been proposed and is awaiting central approval.
Wider Impact Across the State
Elsewhere in Nagaland,
landslides and retaining wall failures were reported in Mokokchung, Shamator, Tuensang, and Kiphire districts, affecting homes and public infrastructure. In Wokha district, strong winds uprooted power poles, causing outages. Several agricultural areas, including paddy and maize fields, sustained damage due to flooding and slope failures. While emergency measures are ongoing, authorities have warned residents to stay alert as rainfall continues. No human fatalities have been confirmed, but property losses and road blockages remain a major concern across multiple districts.
