Continuous rainfall between October 3 and 5 has triggered widespread slope failures across eastern Nepal, leading to severe ground movement, loss of life, and major infrastructure disruption. In Ramechhap district, a massive groundslip originating from the Khani Khola stream has destabilized the Sunapati hillside, placing around 90 families in Keureni, Saune, Nagasiwa, and Chyamdung villages at high risk. Several homes have collapsed, while others have developed deep structural cracks as new groundwater springs emerged across the slope.
According to local authorities, the movement has been progressive, eroding the slope base and threatening entire settlements. A municipal committee is now coordinating the relocation of families from the most affected zones. The instability follows last year’s reactivation of dormant slopes, emphasizing the district’s long-standing vulnerability to rainfall-induced landslides.

In nearby Ilam district, heavy rains have resulted in 39 deaths and the displacement of 276 families. Of the damaged structures, 132 houses were completely destroyed while 401 sustained partial damage. The government has declared Ilam a disaster crisis zone for three months, citing the scale of destruction caused by landslides and flash floods.
The rainfall also disrupted transportation networks across Koshi, Bagmati, and Karnali provinces. Nine key roads, including the Koshi, Mechi, and Pasang Lhamu Highways, remain blocked by landslides and debris flows. Emergency teams are working to clear the obstructions and restore connectivity.
