A substantial landslide along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) caused the collapse of a hotel and several shops built along the roadway, local reports indicate. No loss of life has been reported, since early signs of instability led to early evacuation.
Preliminary observations suggest that the failure was triggered by recent rainfall and saturated cut slopes along the highway. Damage included partial or full structural failure of commercial buildings adjacent to the highway. Debris and soil slid down the slope onto sections of the highway, compromising traffic flow and posing significant hazard to travelers and businesses in the area.
Officials and road crews have closed the affected segment of the highway while mobilizing debris-removal and stabilization equipment. Assessment of the slope’s geotechnical stability, identifying zones of potential failure, and planning remediation work is still pending.
