A landslide halted traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in J&K’s Ramban, India, on Sunday, April 2.
More specifically, the landslide occurred just outside the brand new 880m long T5 Panthyal Tunnel, which was delivered in March 2023. Panthyal has been labeled as one of the most troubled spots along the national highway of Jammu-Srinagar in terms of rockfall hazard, and the T5 Tunnel was constructed for traffic to bypass it.
Footage from the incident has emerged, where shooting stones and boulders can be seen falling and bouncing on the highway.
The event caused the highway to remain closed for the debris to be cleared. The highway’s part between Nashri to Navyuga tunnel will also remain closed from 6 a.m. on April 7 till 6 a.m. the next day for repair works to be carried out.
It is worth mentioning that landslides and rockfalls are not uncommon in the area, and a previous similar incident occurred roughly a month ago.
