Typhoon Lan causes flooding and landslides in Japan (video)

The typhoon struck Japan early Monday, October 23, causing widespread flooding and mudslides and leaving at least four people dead.

Lan made landfall at around 3 a.m. local time on Monday, on the Pacific coast of central Japan, according to the Kyodo News service. It brought heavy rainfall and strong winds of about 165 kph (100 mph), as the CNN Meteorologist Haley Brink reports.

Rivers did overflow in several parts of the country, subsequently causing flooding to hundreds of houses and streets. A container ship was stranded after being swept onto a harbor wall, but all crew members managed to escape injury. The BBC video that follows shows flooded houses, collapsed roads and homes engulfed by a huge mudslide, in the aftermath of the typhoon.

More than 200,000 people had been ordered to evacuate as Typhoon Lan approached, according to the country's Fire and Disaster Management Agency, while another 2.2 million homes were under advisory to prepare for evacuation. At least four people have been killed, while another 130 are slightly injured, Reuters reports.

By Monday afternoon, Typhoon Lan was heading out to the sea, having been downgraded to a category 2 storm (tropical depression),  after powering north for days as an intense category 4 storm, according to the Tropical Storm Risk monitoring site.
