Quick Clay Failure on Norway’s E6 at Levanger

On August 30, 2025, a suspected quick clay landslide severed Norway’s main north–south corridor near Nesvatnet, Levanger, collapsing both lanes of the E6, an older parallel road, and a section of the Nordlandsbanen railway. One worker is missing and another person was hospitalized after a vehicle was swept into water. The failure created a large void (sinkhole) and unstable margins, leading to evacuations of nearby properties and coordinated search and stabilization operations by multiple agencies. Detours now route traffic east via Sweden or across the Trondheimsfjord by the Flakk–Rørvik ferry, resulting in increased traffic on rural detour routes.

Quick clay in central and southern Norway can appear firm but lose strength rapidly when remolded by erosion, construction activities are occuring, or when high pore pressures are accumulated, transitioning to a fluid mass.

The Levanger slide shows retrogression from the initial scarp toward nearby transport infrastructure, explaining the concurrent loss of highway and rail embankments. Immediate priorities include staged buttressing at scarp toes, controlled debris regrading, and drainage measures to limit further remolding.

Rail and road owners report that subgrade stabilization will precede any track or pavement reinstatement. Historical equivalents, including Bronze Age slide deposits in nearby valleys, underline the long-term persistence of this hazard in glaciomarine clays.
