More lives were lost and more landslides occurred in the Philippines last Friday by Typhoon Haiyan, only a month after the Philippines earthquake-induced landslides.
The storm surge was definitely the main reason for the catastrophe causing floods, landslides and structural damages. According to official statements the waves were as high as two-story buildings. Typhoon Haiyan appears to be the strongest tropical cyclone in the world this year, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Transportation was blocked due to fallen trees, the land was inundated with floodwater, most roads were inaccessible and communications were lost, due to the severe storm. The typhoon first struck the eastern islands of Samar and Tacloban, in Leyte province, heading later toward Vietnam, where it landed on Monday morning. The governor of the Leyte province, a landslide prone area, said that landslides destroyed houses in the hills but no casualties have been reported. 9.5 million people have been affected by the Typhoon, according to the United Nations.
