A new island can be seen being created from an underwater volcano erupting off the coast of Japan, during the past few weeks.
Furthermore, the unnamed volcano started erupting on the 21st of October, approximately 1 kilometer (0.5 miles) south of Japan’s Iwo Jima Island, also known as Ioto.
It took just ten days for the new island’s form to start showing over the sea surface, and by early November it had reached about 100 meters (328 ft.) in diameter and 20 meters (66 ft.) in height, according to Yuji Usui, analyst for the volcanic division of the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Usui noted that during recent years, volcanic activity has been frequent in the area, but the formation of the island is a significant development.
However, he also said that the new island is not expected to last long. This is due to volcanic activity subsiding, as well as the island’s crumbly composition of volcanic rock and ash, which makes it easy for the waves to wash it off.
It is finally worth noting that Japan is home to 111 of the world's 1,500 active volcanoes.
