An enormous crack emerged between the Costa de Hermosillo and the coast, in Sonora, northwest Mexico, baffling the locals and initiating geological investigations to explain what caused the fissure. A drone, which flew over the area, captured the spectacular fissure measuring eight meters in depth and approximately 1 kilometer in length in a video which can be viewed below!
Reportedly, farm workers and vehicles were forced to make a detour around the area of the fissure in order to avoid the unstable ground, while a second crack was reported to have appeared close to Highway 4 in the same area. Investigations on the causes of the collapse are still in progress, with geologists at the University of Sonora believing that the crack is attributed to an underground stream, formed after a leaking levee constructed to store rainwater, rather than an earthquake at the San Andreas fault.
