A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico in the area of Tecpan de Galeana in Guerrero state, yesterday, May 8th, about 60 miles northwest of Acapulco. The USGS reported that the temblor occurred at a depth of 23 kilometers (15miles) and its epicenter was located about 66 kilometers (40miles) away from the epicenter of the April 18 event that hit central and south Mexico. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Yesterday's seismic event struck at noon and sent people in Acapulco and other areas in the streets to protect themselves. Government officials said no reports of serious injuries were reported and hospitals, airports and public transport operated normally in Mexico City. Among reported damage, was the collapse of a 30-meter section of a highway brigdge, which was already affected by the main shock and last fall's flooding. Three homes collapsed in Zijuatanejo and 17 more sustained severe structural damage, according to the state's governor, who also reported landslides in major highways, such as the highway connecting Acapulco with Mexico City. Moreover, local authorities reported the collapse of simple adobe homes in the area near the epicenter.
According to the USGS agency, this was an aftershock of the April 18 earthquake which measured a magnitude of 7.2. Geophysicict William Barnhart in an email to The Associated Press, supported that this is not an abnormal event, since it is considered an aftershock, and it does not significantly reduce the remaining stored stress in the seismic gap. USGS estimates that a quake up to a magnitude 8.4 may be potentially generated by the Guerrero Gap. Such an event would be even more powerful and catastrophic than the 8.1 magnitude quake affecting large areas of Mexico City and killing about 9,500 people in 1985.
