Heavy storm and numerous landslides in Southern California: at least 9 fatalities

Southern California, particularly Los Angeles, experienced severe flooding due to heavy rain. Downtown LA received over 7 inches of rain in two days, and it was the third-highest recorded amount in only two days. Unfortunately, nine people have died due to numerous landslides and mudslides that occurred following a strong atmospheric river storm in California.

The Los Angeles Fire Department noted 562 landslides and mudslides in the Los Angeles area, particularly impacting canyon roads north of Sunset Boulevard and south of Mulholland Drive. This area experienced significant mudslides and washouts along a two-block stretch of Mulholland Drive.

In Santa Barbara County, heavy rainfall prompted evacuations from an apartment building after erosion caused its deck to collapse, while it is reported that at least 15 buildings are not habitable due to safety reasons, and 31 others suffered significant damage. Furthermore, over 250 fallen trees and branches and nearly 160 potholes on roads have been reported. It is mentioned that the city between Sunday and Monday gοt 14.25 inches, which is the amount that it typically gets annually.

Residents were advised to avoid traveling as the storm caused landslides and flooding, blocking streets and highways in the region. Numerous water rescues occurred when vehicles became trapped on flooded roads. Coastal communities of California have also been triggered by erosion effects. Ahead of the storm, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency in eight counties to aid storm response and recovery efforts.
