Since the 19th of March heavy rainfall caused extensive flooding and landslides in various parts of the Highlands and Momase regions. Three different landslides in Chimbu Province, located in the Highlands Region, caused the death of at least 23 people, while many others are still missing. Adverse weather conditions intensify the flood situation and complicate the response efforts.
Furthermore, in the Momase Region, rising water levels in East Sepik Province have led to an unspecified number of people being forced to leave their homes. For example, the village of Brahman in Madang Province and several nearby villages have been evacuated due to flooding.
According to local authorities reports, floodwaters and debris caused the collapse of at least two bridges. In addition, coastal areas have experienced flooding due to the tides. There are, also, concerns regarding the potential for further landslides to occur in hilly or mountainous areas, particularly in areas where the soil has become saturated due to heavy rain.
It should be mentioned that urban areas with insufficient stormwater drainage systems may experience floods, while areas that are downstream from large natural water tanks or rivers could face flash flooding following intense rainfall. Ponding on road surfaces could create hazardous driving conditions, potentially leading to temporary closures of flooded routes or highways. Regional airports may experience delays and cancellations, while regional rail lines could be blocked, resulting in delays and cancellations.
In all, reports stated that even after the improvement of weather conditions, it may take several days for floodwaters to withdraw and officials to clear debris. Repair and reconstruction efforts may also cause disruptions if the infrastructure sustains severe damage.
