Floods and landslides have occurred in northern Turkiye, starting July 10, due to heavy rainfall that began two days prior.
Furthermore, flooding was the result of torrential rain in areas near the Black Sea, which, according to Geological Engineering Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş is directly related to the effects of climate change. More specifically, he stated that “The main cause of floods is the continuous warming of the Black Sea, causing increasing precipitation in coastal areas. The floods and landslides caused by these floods will continue to increase in the coming years.”.
The events caused transportation disruptions in several regions, with most noticeable the closure of sections of the main highway connecting Istanbul and Ankara in the Bolu province, which included the Bolu Mountain Tunnel.
The Ordu province was heavily affected by the events, while the Hurriyet reported one person missing in the region, as well as a flooding related fatality in the Samsun province.
Finally, videos emerged from the entrance of a tunnel in Ordu, which shows the road in front of it collapsing and getting washed away.
