A rather large landslide was caught on video swallowing a road in China, on the morning of Wednesday, July 17.
More specifically, the event took place near the village of Jiajiadian, which is located close to the town of Guizhou in Zigui County of the Hubei Province.
What can be seen in the video is a small edge of the slope detaching first, while seconds later a vast amount of it comes crashing down.
The Guizhou Provincial Institute of Geological Environment Monitoring stated in their official Douyin account that the landslide had a volume of about 800,000 cubic meters, while it destroyed some 1,200 meters of the Wu Highway village road and roughly 60 acres of citrus orchards.
In addition to this, the authorities said that nobody was harmed in the event, as luckily no buildings or cars were present in the collapsed area.
It is however worth noting that according to Chinese media reports, some people posted on TikTok that they saw two people getting caught in the landslide.
As for the reasons behind the collapse, the area had recently experienced excessive precipitation and flooding, while it is located next to the banks of the Three Gorges Reservoir.
According to the landslide blog, the floodgates of the dam had been opened during the last two days, and it is apparent that both the wet conditions and reservoir drawdown could have played part in the landslide’s development.
Finally, parts of China have experienced rather heavy rainfall during the past months and landslides have frequently been taking place.
Namely, one happened in Longquan Village, Gangjia Town, just some days ago, while two more took place on June 23 and June 16 in the Hunan and Fujian Provinces respectively.
A little while ago, we had also covered the story of another Chinese landslide that was caught on camera.
