A series of atmospheric rivers are affecting California, U.S.A., causing serious flooding and mudslides, while 34 of the 58 counties have declared a state of emergency.
The first one, called “Pineapple Express” struck on Friday and caused as much as 13 inches of rainfall in some areas.
According to Brian Ochs, from the National Weather Service, a second atmospheric river is expected to hit the state on Monday.
So far, the extreme weather has caused 2 fatalities, while around 9,400 people are under evacuation orders. In addition to those numbers, some 54,000 people are without electricity, out of which 18,000 are in the county of Monterey.
Parts of California have experienced mudslides, affecting roads and transportation. The most notable one was in the town of Soquel, where the main street was washed out, leaving residents trapped.
This was the state’s 10th such event during this winter.
