Crane collapse strikes passenger train in Thailand claiming at least 32 lives

At least 32 people were killed and more than 60 injured on Wednesday morning after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time in Nakhon Ratchasima Province as the train was travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani with nearly 200 passengers and crew onboard. The crane strike caused several carriages to derail, with one coach catching fire shortly after impact.

Emergency responders, including firefighters and medical teams, were dispatched to the scene, where passengers were trapped inside damaged carriages. Authorities confirmed that no warning signs were reported immediately prior to the collapse.

The crane was operating as part of an elevated high-speed railway project intended to form a regional link between Thailand, Laos, and China. Preliminary statements from Thai and Chinese officials indicate that the affected section was under construction by a Thai contractor, despite the project’s broader association with China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Initial reports suggest the crane may have been lifting a heavy precast concrete element at the time of failure. Thai authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine whether the collapse resulted from procedural errors, equipment failure, or deviations from approved construction methods.

Thailand’s prime minister publicly stated that the incident was an engineering failure rather than a natural event, emphasizing accountability. The State Railway of Thailand has announced legal action against the construction company involved, while inspections continue across similar works along the corridor.
