While waters are beginning to recede, the flooding aftermath in Minnesota is going to afflict people for quite some time, particularly in Le Sueur and the Carlson family. A mudslide next to their home, rushed into the family's living room and caused a propane leakage, which luckily did not blew up the entire home.
Terry Carlson and her daughter Tanya were inside the house at the moment of the slide, which started be a crack of a tree and then rushed into their living room. As soon as both women smelled propane, they notified 911 and evacuated the home, which other than the damage caused in the living room, does not have a scratch, according to Randy Carlson. The mud in the living room cannot be moved for now, since there is a danger for the rafters to break and cause greater damage.
The Carlson family, initially assumed that insurance would cover the repair cost, however, as stated in one of the exclusions, soil movement consisting of mudslides, landslides earthquakes and nuclear war are not covered. Even if the family decided to make repairs on its own, stabilizing the hillside next to their home, ensuring that a new slide will not occur, would require around $250,000. An amount of money, that newly retired Randy Carlson cannot afford, unless someone steps in for help.
A FEMA representative, dealing with flood insurance issues, stated that mud flows are occasionally covered by flood insurance, but mudslides are not. In Minnesota, about 12,000 homes have flood insurance. Watch the video below for more information!
