A collection of photos showing the Niagara Falls drained from water are presented below. Water flow was diverted as part of a project to examine the geology of the falls back in 1969.
In the summer of 1969, engineers diverted the water flow from the American and Bridal Veil Falls to the Horseshoe Falls. Water was diverted after buidling a 600-foot cofferdam extending from the American shoreline up to Goat Island and its construction required 28,000 tons of earth and rock. The decision for the cofferdam construction and the diversion of the water was taken following the occurrence of massive rock falls at the edge of the Falls, which filled the base with enormous boulders and debris. The examination of the eroding rock face by geologists and engineers did not lead to the costly solution of cleaning the base of the falls. The cofferdam was removed in November 1969 and the water returned to its original course, letting nature take the lead.
The collection of photographs is taken from the Niagara Falls Public Library and the collection of Robin Adair.
