Ten Houses Lost to Riverbank Collapse in An Giang and the on-going Crisis

On May 18, 2025, a 70-meter stretch of riverbank along the Ong Chuong River in Vietnam’s An Giang Province failed, causing the rear sections of ten homes in Cho Moi District to collapse into the water. Residents reported hearing a loud noise before fleeing the structures. Local authorities confirmed that no injuries occurred, and temporary shelter has been arranged. Each affected household received initial financial assistance while the district evaluates the construction of a protective embankment.

The incident follows a growing number of similar events throughout the Mekong Delta. An Giang has become one of the most erosion-affected provinces, with businesses and homes experiencing significant structural damage. A rice mill owner in the region recently reported the failure of multiple layers of embankments despite prior investment in mitigation. Over 145 erosion cases have been documented in the first half of the year, resulting in damage to over 1.7 km of embankments and 1.5 km of roads, along with 136 affected structures.

Experts associate the increasing frequency and severity of erosion with a combination of reduced sediment flow, intensified water traffic, and local land use changes. The decline in sediment supply is attributed to upstream dam activity and sand extraction. Current response strategies focus on temporary relocation and site-specific reinforcement. Long-term approaches may involve coordinated sediment management, updated geotechnical risk assessments, and the expansion of early warning systems in regions identified as high-risk.
