On September 8, 2025, a section of the Saw Mill River Parkway in Westchester County collapsed following intense rainfall across the tri-state area. The failure occurred between Lawrence Street in Dobbs Ferry and Farragut Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson, just north of Yonkers. Authorities reported that approximately 47,000 vehicles typically use this stretch daily, highlighting the disruption caused by the sudden closure. Photos released by the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department showed large segments of pavement shifted out of place, with one section forming a significant sinkhole near Exit 13.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) confirmed that the collapse was directly linked to weekend rainfall and storm activity, which produced over two inches of precipitation in nearby Scarsdale. Crews were deployed immediately to stabilize the roadway and initiate repairs. By Monday evening, northbound lanes had reopened, and southbound lanes were cleared for traffic the following morning after emergency work.
Although the Saw Mill River Parkway is not classified as flood-prone, this incident demonstrates the geotechnical vulnerability of roadways subjected to intense rainfall and how localized hydrological surges can destabilize subgrade soils and weaken pavement structures. Rapid infiltration and subsurface erosion can create voids beneath pavement, leading to structural collapse. The importance of proactive drainage management, slope monitoring, and subsurface inspections, especially in heavily trafficked corridors is highlighted once more. Lessons from this event may inform future design guidelines for storm resilience and adaptive infrastructure in regions facing increasingly severe weather.
