A rockslide occurred on Monday in Chaffee County, in south-central Colorado killing five people who were hiking on a trail to Agnes Vaille Falls. The causes of the incident are not yet identified.
Chaffee county officials said that previous rains and a recent snowfall could have triggered the rockslide. The water inside rock’s fractures as well as the low temperature could have caused the rock slides as Karen Berry, interim state geologist with the Colorado Geological Survey, said. She also mentioned that rockslides are not rare in the area. The trail will remain closed, according to officials, as the area is still very dangerous.
