A massive rockslide occurred on December 7, 2015 in Hanogi in Mandi district of Himachal, India. The site conditions consist of a practically vertical rock face adjacent to a roadway running along a river. The roadway apparently services passenger and commercial vehicles. The cause of the failure is unknown, but is being investigated.
Typically rockslides and landslides coincide with heavy percipitation events or when nearby construction activities cause excessive unmonitored vibrations. As seen from Figure 1 below, warning signs advise travelers of falling rocks along the roadway. Therefore a change in the rock face structure could have contributed to the failure. Please see Rockslide News Report for onsite local new agency report of the rockslide.
