A massive landslide took place in the town of Anni, in the Kullu district of India’s Himachal Pradesh state on Thursday, August 24.
The landslide was caught on camera leveling eight multi-story buildings, while damaging another two along its path.
So far, initial reports state that no one was harmed in the event, as the risk of landslides occurring due to heavy rain had been identified, and the buildings had been evacuated a few days prior to the catastrophe.
Meanwhile, an investigation on the site of the collapse is currently conducted from India’s national disaster response force.
It is worth noting that many areas of Himachal Pradesh have been on high alert due to excessive rainfall, and authorities have been evacuating residents.
Areas of South Asia typically receive about 70-80% of annual precipitation during the monsoon period, which starts in June.
Northern India has been affected by widespread rainfall during the past few weeks, which has caused a lot of damage to houses and infrastructure, as well as loss of human life.
Namely, it has been reported by the disaster management authority, that at least 361 people in India have lost their lives and another 342 have been injured since June due to weather-related phenomena.
250 of the fatalities were reported in the state of Himachal Pradesh, while authorities estimate the cost of damages to the state at about $1.2 billion.
