Non-profit's organization survey and analyses on climate change, point out that South and North Carolina face the threat of extreme flood events as a result of sea level rise. Climate Central of Princeton in New Jersey, plans on releasing the same report on Georgia in the following days. Information on different flooding scenarios are available on an interactive map for all coastal U.S. areas!
The purpose of the organization is to analyze threat scenarios on population and housing in all coastal states and was initially based on maps from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, according to lead author of the reports, Ben Strauss. The new updated interactive maps issued by the Climate Central of Princeton are improved in quality and incorporate extra parameters, such as property values, infrastructure, schools, churches, power plants and others, that are at risk of flooding. The interactive map shows threats from sea level rise and storms for over 3,000 coastal towns, cities and users can see different flooding scenarios, by clicking on each state of by entering a specific zip code.
Reports on the states of North and South Carolina, released in the previous weeks, reveal that both states' coastal areas could experience extreme floods, exceeding 4 feet above high tide within the next 40 years. Projections of the sea level rise exceed 10 inches by 2050 in both states, causing major concern, given the 1inch (on average) rise observed historically within a decade time span. The flood susceptible zones include 2,500 miles of road, 15 schools, 108 houses of worship and 131 waste sites and sewage plants less than 4 feet above the high tide level in North Carolina. The numbers are not much different for South Carolina, with 1,200 miles of road, 13 schools, 33 houses of worship and 76 waste sites and sewage plants.
