Guests at the island of Sakhalin in Eastern Russia have a chance to see a unique natural phenomenon. This phenomenon is known as the Pugachevsky mud volcano that looks like a huge human eye. This incredible natural phenomenon was captured by the 40 year old photographer Mikhail Mikhailov, who saw the eye as he was flying over the eastern Russia.
The mud volcanoes are formations which are generated by the geological secretion of gases and liquids as the pressure builds up beneath the earth and the mud is released to the surface, creating an unusual pattern.
Talking about his experience, the Mikhailov says, "I haven't ever seen anything like this before. There are quite a lot of mud volcanoes in the world and this one is well-known. But I haven't ever seen it looking like an eye. It was a very strong eruption; the mud was getting out from one point and got spread around evenly. It created a very beautiful view, looking exactly like an earth eye, especially from a helicopter. It is definitely a rare phenomenon."
