A massive landslide was triggered as a result of heavy rain in the area of Badakshan in northeastern Afghanistan, last Friday. At least 350 people were killed and it is estimated that 2,000 are still missing. Survivors found shelter in nearby villages and tents provided by local authorities and rescue crews.
Heavy rain and flooding have hit the mountainous area of Afghanistan, causing a hill side to collapse and bury under several meters of mud and rubble around 300 homes in Abu Barik village. Ari Gaitanis, a spokesman from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, said U.N. was working with local authorities to look for survivors. However, Governor of Badakhshan, Shah Waliullah Adeeb, says there were not enough shovels for villagers to dig up for survivors.
According to U.S.G.S. some of the deadliest landslides in world history have occurred in Asia, among which an event in China in 1920, burrying 100,000 people under the mud, and a 1949 slide killing from 12,000 to 20,000 people in today's Tajikistan.
