Landslide claims three lives in Switzerland

Four people lost their lives in southern Switzerland over the past weekend, as floods and landslides caused by extensive rainfall and melting snow wreaked havoc.

Furthermore, the authorities announced on Sunday, June 30, that three people had lost their lives in a landslide that took place in the Fontana area of the Maggia valley, at the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino.

In addition to this, at least one more video shows a debris flow at the neighboring canton of Valais, near Saint-Nicolas.

It was also made known that one more person had lost their life in a hotel, while the Police believe that he was caught by surprise by rising floodwaters.

One more person has been missing since Saturday in the Binn area of the upper Rhone valley.

Rivers burst their banks, including the Rhone River, the side valleys south of which saw the most precipitation.

The Maggia River also burst its banks, and camping sides along it had to be evacuated, while a road bridge collapsed near Visletto.

Parts of northern Italy also experienced heavy rainfall, which again caused floods and mudslides, with firefighters stating that 80 rescue operations had to be carried out, and about 200 people evacuated by helicopter on Sunday.
