A shallow earthquake has struck southern Spain, injuring at least three people and damaging buildings in and around Granada. The tremor hit at 10:37 local time (08:37 GMT) on Tuesday, about 10 km south of Granada city, and was widely felt across the historic city and beyond.
Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded the largest of Tuesday's tremors at magnitude 4.7, with a very shallow epicentre at Gójar. Early reporting cited slightly different figures for the same event — the BBC gave magnitude 4.8 near the neighbouring town of Alhendín, and the USGS 4.9 — a normal degree of variation between agencies as data is reviewed. The main shock was followed by several further tremors above magnitude 4 in nearby towns on Granada's southern outskirts, and came after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that woke residents in the city shortly after 1 am on Saturday. According to the IGN, it is the latest in a series of very shallow tremors that began in the area on Friday 14 August.

Residents rushed into the streets as buildings shook and debris fell from facades. Damage was reported mainly in residential buildings, with large cracks in walls, sections of facade dislodged and bricks strewn across pavements. Vehicles were damaged by falling material, and emergency services received multiple calls about cracks, loose masonry and debris. Three people were lightly injured, according to Andalusian regional official Antonio Sanz, one of them a minor who was taken to hospital.
One of the most visible effects was the disruption to Granada's Alhambra, the UNESCO-listed palace and fortress complex that drew 2.7 million visitors last year. Tourist access to parts of the site was restricted after the quake: the Alcazaba, the complex's oldest section, was evacuated, and access to the Nasrid Palaces was suspended while specialists assessed the complex. Authorities have not reported physical damage to the Alhambra, and most of the site reopened the following day.
Several museums, administrative buildings and sports facilities were also closed as a precaution, while primary health centres remained open. Local media showed several hotels being evacuated, with guests and staff gathering outside.

Granada's metro operator announced on social media that it was reducing train speeds to 30 km/h as a precautionary measure. This kind of restriction is common after shallow seismic events, where track, stations, retaining structures and nearby buildings may need rapid inspection.
Although the earthquake was moderate in magnitude, its shallow depth made it more strongly felt at the surface. Very shallow earthquakes are felt more intensely and are more likely to cause localised damage than a deeper tremor of similar strength, particularly where older buildings, historic masonry, facades, parapets and non-structural elements are vulnerable to shaking.
The immediate concern is not only major collapse. Falling bricks, cracked walls, loosened stonework and unstable facade elements can pose serious risk to pedestrians and vehicles. In historic cities such as Granada, post-earthquake inspections must also consider fragile heritage structures, where damage may not be obvious at first glance.
Authorities have warned that further tremors and aftershocks are possible in the coming days, and residents have been advised to remain vigilant.
