Floods and landslides in Santa Catarina, Brazil: 3 fatalities

The state government said that 26 towns have reported damages brought on by the recent storms, while Rio Negrinho and Ascurra have both proclaimed states of emergency.

According to the municipality of Rio Negrinho, 80 individuals have been relocated as a result of the recent rains while damages reported to about 60 buildings and structures.

Two persons are still missing after a landslide in Rodeio, and emergency rescue personnel are looking for them with sniffer dogs. On January 19, three bodies were discovered earlier at the scene. A temporary shelter has been established by the municipal authorities for the approximately 190 displaced residents. Early on January 18, 2023, Rodeio recorded 173.1mm of rain in 12 hours.

State Governor Jorginho Mello flew there in a chopper, but the weather prevented him from landing close to the scene.

In Rodeio, almost 5,000 clients were without electricity, and in Ascurra, about 3,200. Flooding caused a number of people to be relocated in Bom Jesus, and another 21 persons were displaced in Ituporanga. Other locations reported to have had flooding include Benedito Novo, Canoinhas, Concórdia, Major Vieira, Três Barras, Lauro Muller, Siderópolis, and Pomerode.
