Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials made efforts to find out the reasons of the settlement that occurred in Leo Frigo Bridge, in Green Bay on September 25, 2013.
The main reason, according to Tom Buchholz, the DOT project manager for the bridge investigation, was the corrosion of the piles used to support the pier 22, due to soft material of the ground and the water’s movement. Additional corrosion to adjacent piers was found through test pits, with no risk of collapse because of the high safety factors of the piles, as Buchholz said. Further investigation continues to the rest of the piers.
