Settlement of a wide section of the roadway on the east side of Leo Frigo Bridge, in Green Bay, Wisconsin was noticed early Wednesday morning and police ordered the closure of the Bridge. DOT officials said that no indication of malfunction was detected during the last inspection of the Bridge, in August 2012 and soon it was renovated.
The cause of the failure seems to be the settlement of one of the pillars that support the bridge, as Gov. Scott Walker mentioned. Engineers stated that the pier, that settled two feet into the ground, may need to be replaced but there isn’t a specific timetable for this. The footings of the pier are supported by piles which were driven into bedrock at a depth of 100 feet. Their performance hasn't been evaluated yet.
