The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced on Tuesday the closure of Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, in Dare County over the Oregon Inlet on N.C 12, due to erosion of the bridge's supports.
The department has spent almost $56 million on repair works, maintenance and inspections since 1990 and an extra $1.8 million only a year ago for the installation of steel beams as additional support and for the replacement of eroded sections, where new scouring was recently detected. According to Engineering News Records, rock-filled baskets were placed between the bridge supports, on the bottom of the inlet and sandbags were set around the pilings by repair crews. The bridge opened in 1963 and plays a vital role for the residents providing the only highway connection between Hatteras Island and mainland North Carolina. The Bonner Bridge Replacement Project, intending to replace the existing bridge with a new 2.8-mile bridge, was scheduled to begin in early 2013 but works have not yet begun due to legal challenges.
