A Cowi-Arup joint venture has been appointed to deliver the design, environmental impact assessment and utility relocations of Copenhagen’s new M5 line, by the city’s metro operator, Metroselskabet.
Furthermore, the aim for the M5 line is to have a 50% less overall carbon footprint as compared to Copenhagen’s existing lines.
According to Arup, the line will consist of 10 stations and will run from Copenhagen Central Station via Islands Brygge, Amagerbrogade and Refshaleøen all the way to Lynetteholm and Østerport. In addition to this, future extension plans for the closure of the Østerport and Copenhagen Central ring and a bifurcation chamber for the Øresund metro line are also included in the design.
The first phase will consist of the concept design as well as the environmental impact assessment. This phase will aim to identify any possible effects that the project might have on residents’ health, noise and vibration pollution, as well as local biodiversity and Copenhagen’s cultural heritage.
Finally, the M5 line is going to serve existing and emerging urban areas of the city, in addition to relieving congestion in parts of the existing metro system.
