An enormous mudslide occurred this past weekend, in Grand Mesa, a remote part of western Colorado near the small town of Collbran. The size of the slide is amazingly large, even larger than the Oso landslide, occuring in March and was triggered after two days of strong rain in the region.
Reportedly, dimensions of the slide measure about half a mile in width, between 2 and 3 miles in length and several hundred feet deep at the center. Only at the edges, the slide is about 20 to 30 ft deep, according to Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey. So far, three men are reported missing, who have been investigating a blocked irrigation canal, probably a result of an earlier event. Mudslides are common in the area, whose soil profile consists of soft sandstone and layers of weak rock, according to state geologist Karen Berry. It was the size of it that surprised everybody. As a result of the slide, energy companies have already suspended their operation in the area, while wells will be offline perhaps for months, said David Ludlam, executive director of the West Slope Colorado Oil & Gas Association.
