Flooding phenomena continue to strike many areas in Greece, causing serious problems in populated areas and farming land as existing levees can no longer restrain the waters of swollen rivers. See the extent of the damage in the video and photo gallery below!
Evros prefecture, Greece is declared in a state of emergency, as many villages along Evros River have been evacuated as a result of the river's overflow. The river's water level reached 6.8 meters, far exceeding the 5.7m "red-alert" limit. Αuthorities have been struggling to restrain the rising waters, by constructing levees with the help of the residents in the area. In the village of Praggi, residents built walls outside their doors to prevent water destroying their homes. The Greek-Turkish borders at Kastanies, temporarily closed and levees were also built under the fear of flooding. Greek authorities express their concern over the Bulgarian authorities announcement about releasing water from the Ivailovgrad Dam at a rate of 100 cubic meters per second to relieve pressure on the dam. They expect that this decision may worsen the situation in the next 12 hours, which is the time required for the water to reach the Greek side.
At Evritania prefecture, a bridge on Krikelopotamos River collapsed and a nearby village was evacuated due to landslides. Other villages in the area have been cut off as a result of settlements in the road network. The video below presents the bridge, built in the 1930's before its collapse, while the photos provided below it, showing the collapsed bridge, are indicative of the volume of water and its devastating effect.
In central Greece, the Spercheios River at Lamia overflowed, flooding many regions, covering tracks and causing problems to the rail network.
