A rockslide that occurred in north India resulted in a bridge collapse and in (at least) 9 fatalities.
The rockslide struck in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, July 25, 2021. In particular, it occurred in a mountainous region near a village located in the Himalayas.
The slide comprised of large boulders that impacted an iron bridge which immediately collapsed. Reports make mention of additional infrastructure damage with about 50 houses and local roads being affected. Unfortunately, 9 people died and numerous were injured. An operation was quickly launched and people were either hospitalized or treated on the spot. All of the victims were tourists and were reportedly hit by rock debris as they did not have enough time to escape.
A stunning video showing the progress of the landslide to the point where boulders impact the bridge and some cars was uploaded and can be found below. The bridge instantly folds in two and gives way after being hit by a large boulder.
According to local officials, numerous landslides were triggered in the region during the past few days as a result of heavy rainfalls. Similar events are common in India, especially in mountainous regions, during the monsoon season (June to September) when the precipitation levels significantly increase. Scientists suggest that climate change has exacerbated the intensity and frequency of weather phenomena, leading to increased landslide incidents.
