Slope Failures and Submerged Homes: April Disasters in Indonesia

Indonesia’s landscapes—while rich in biodiversity and beauty—remain increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather, as evidenced by recent floods and landslides that struck Java and Kalimantan in early April 2025. A deadly landslide in East Java’s Mojokerto district claimed 10 lives after heavy rains triggered a catastrophic slope failure. The victims included a family of seven and three vegetable traders, caught on a mountain road near Watu Lumpang resort.

Simultaneously, widespread flooding caused by overflowing rivers hit Central and East Kalimantan. In Murung Raya Regency, 194 families were affected as water levels rose up to 150 cm, damaging homes, schools, and places of worship. In Penajam Paser Utara, the Miyango River submerged Karang Jinawi Village, leaving major roads impassable.

These hydrometeorological disasters come during Indonesia’s transitional season, when shifting atmospheric conditions heighten the frequency of intense rainfall. Coupled with steep terrain, deforestation, and limited drainage infrastructure, these factors amplify the risk of landslides and flooding.

Emergency responses are ongoing. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has mobilized resources, issued rainfall warnings, and advised residents to remain alert using tools like the InaRisk app. However, the scale of these events underlines the urgent need for integrated geotechnical planning, robust early-warning systems, and sustainable land-use practices.

Indonesia’s April 2025 events once more reaffirm a crucial message: nature doesn’t wait. Resilience must be built before the ground begins to shift.
