CERN has issued a market survey to identify, qualify and select firms which will be invited to the forthcoming Invitation to Tender procedure for the provision of civil & geotechnical engineering consultancy services for Future Circular Collider (FCC) site investigations in France and Switzerland.
Firms interested in participating in the forthcoming Invitation to Tender procedure are invited to upload the Qualification Questionnaire duly completed, signed, stamped and dated, accompanied by all the requested documents and references on CERN’s e-survey interface no later than 22nd of May, 2025.
CERN is currently undertaking Phase 1 of FCC site investigations. These began in October 2024 and are scheduled to finish by the end of 2025. These investigations include around 30 deep boreholes and over 80km of geophysics, both in France and Switzerland. This Phase 1 campaign assesses areas of geological uncertainty within the FCC study area. Once this current phase is complete, CERN will review and optimize the precise position of the underground infrastructure proposed if required.
Phase 2 of the site investigations are foreseen to begin in early 2026 (starting with the design of the new investigations campaign) and will be targeted at key infrastructure, namely caverns, where detailed geotechnical information is required to build a local, detailed, 3-dimensional model of the geology and associated geotechnical parameters. In addition, investigations at regular distances along the proposed tunnel alignment will be carried out to reinforce the existing geological and geotechnical models and associated data. The Phase 2 site investigation works will be awarded to one or more contractors which are foreseen to begin in 2028 subject to necessary approval.
After completing the Phase 2 site investigations, the information produced on the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface will be available for the completion of detailed civil engineering design work necessary for the preparation of tendering activity for the eventual construction work packages. It is not foreseen that additional site investigations will be initiated by CERN after the completion of the Phase 2 site investigations.
