The Underground Infrastructure China 2011 will take place in Grand Mercure Hongqiao Shanghai, China on 26-27 September, 2011.
It seems for China size does matter. Despite being the largest country in Asia, China will still be going underground to maximize the country’s spatial requirements. But going underground will not be an easy task for the world’s second largest economy.
Ming Lu, Chief Scientist for SINTEF, believes the most common challenge for China in terms of underground space exploitation is the regional master plan and the process of decision-making.
“One has to keep it in mind that when an underground cavern is constructed it cannot be completely abolished like an aboveground structure such as buildings and bridges. I do not agree with the opinion to simply make caverns and somebody will find how to use them. A careful general planning from very beginning before underground construction is absolutely necessary,” he said.
Yang Zhiming, Dean of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Administration Department and Vice Chairman & Secretary in General for the Shanghai Society for Trenchless Technology, (CSSTT) explains that urban spaces, including underground spaces, are becoming increasingly valuable with the accelerating process of urbanisation. Therefore, attention should be given to the development and utilisation of urban underground space.
