In late July 2025, northern and southwestern China experienced deadly landslides caused by prolonged and intense rainfall. In Hebei Province, a village near Chengde City was hit by a landslide that killed four people and left eight missing. Emergency teams were dispatched to assess slope conditions and manage the flood-affected regions, which also included severe river surges and overflowing reservoirs.

Over 4,600 people in Hebei’s Fuping County were evacuated as nearby waterways reached critical levels. In suburban Miyun, north of Beijing, the inflow to the Miyun Reservoir reached a historic peak of 6,550 m³/s. As a precaution, high-risk roads and settlements were sealed, and emergency shelters were activated. Elsewhere, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia saw roads submerged and crop fields inundated.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources reported flooding in 41 rivers and activated early warning systems.
In Yunnan Province, a separate landslide killed five people after engulfing a vehicle in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County. The event mobilized more than 80 rescue personnel and five excavators. These events highlight geotechnical considerations related to climate variability, particularly in areas where slope stability and drainage capacity may be affected
