Elizabeth TBM arrived last Friday at Stepney Green cavern during its journey to Farringdon. Elizabeth and Victoria are the second pair of TBMs used for the project and scheduled to complete the longest tunnel on the railway, between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon, with a length of 5.16miles (8.3km).
Both of them are Earth Pressure Balance Machines, they were launched last winter and Victoria is scheduled to enter the site in the next few weeks. Phyllis TBM, one of the first pair of Crossrail’s machines, arrived at Farringdon Station last month. The Stepney Green caverns’ 50m length, 17m width and 15m height rank them between the longest caverns in Europe. The Sprayed Concrete Lining technique was used for their mining. They are also significant for the Crossrail as they create an intersection for the railway, connecting tunnels from northeast and southeast London. Crossrail’s tunneling work started in May 2012 and is scheduled to have finished by 2018.
