Dubai received more than a year’s worth of rain from the night of Monday the 15th of April until the evening of Tuesday the 16th, causing major flooding.
Furthermore, CNN reported that nearly 4 inches (100 mm) of rain fell in the city within twelve hours, which is roughly equal to the yearly average of 3.73 inches (94.7 mm) that is recorded at Dubai International Airport.
According to the Guardian, from Monday night to Tuesday evening, the city of Dubai received 5.59 inches (142 mm) of precipitation, which the government described as the most experienced in the past 75 years.
Several videos show Dubai International Airport, the world’s second busiest airport, flooded, and large aircraft moving around like boats, while many flights got disrupted.
The flash floods also caused problems to the city’s transportation network and houses.
It is worth noting that many parts of the city lack adequate drainage systems, due to the usually very dry climate.
Finally, Business Insider noted that cloud seeding could have played part in the flooding, quoting Ahmed Habib, a specialist meteorologist at the UAE's National Center of Meteorology, who stated that cloud harvesting operations had taken place on Monday and Tuesday.
