Deep beneath London: HS2 completes critical safety cross passages in Northolt tunnel

HS2 has reached a major underground construction milestone with the completion of all 34 cross passages linking the twin bores of the 8.4-mile Northolt Tunnel beneath west London. Running between West Ruislip and Old Oak Common, the tunnel is one of the longest on the high-speed route and descends to depths of approximately 35 metres below ground. While tunnel boring concluded in 2025, the completion of these cross passages marks a crucial step in transforming the excavated tunnel into an operational railway asset with integrated life-safety infrastructure.

Cross passages are essential emergency features in modern rail tunnels, allowing passengers and maintenance teams to move safely between tunnel bores during incidents. Construction required the use of spray concrete lining excavation, where teams mined carefully through the ground between tunnel segments using staged mini-excavation and immediate structural support. In more geotechnically challenging western sections with high groundwater conditions, engineers adopted ground freezing methods to stabilise water-bearing soils before excavation. This involved creating freeze walls approximately two metres thick, demonstrating the complex geotechnical controls required beneath dense urban environments.

With excavation complete, the project now advances to reinforced concrete collars, waterproofing systems and permanent fire-rated sliding doors capable of resisting intense pressure fluctuations from passing high-speed trains. These works represent more than safety compliance. They define the tunnel’s long-term operational resilience.
