Hundreds of rescue workers are searching for survivors after a manmade landfill failed and overcame 33 buildings and damaged utilities, including natural gas pipelines, in the southern Chinese City of Shenzhen, near the mainland border of Hong Kong.
On the morning of Sunday December 21, 2015 a landslide of landfill material covered 455,000 square yards with 10 feet of earth at an industrial park in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is a sort of industrial boomtown, consisting of expanding industrial factories. The landslide material consisted of cement chunks and other construction waste. The material demolished or damaged 33 buildings and caused a natural gas explosion. The natural gas explosion is now controlled and being repaired. Peoples Daily indicated the landfill accumulated within a stone quarry that is currently used as a dumping area.
Residents in dormitories were notified and evacuated prior to the landslide. Therefore, authorities were aware of the failing slope prior to complete failure. However, rescue workers are continuing the search for approximately 85 unaccounted people. Several revealing photos can be found from BBC News webpage.
