A New Era for London's River Thames: Tideway Super Sewer Starts Operation

London’s long-anticipated super sewer, the Thames Tideway Tunnel, has officially entered operation with the first four valves now open, marking a new chapter in protecting the River Thames from sewage pollution. After eight years of construction, the tunnel, designed to capture and divert sewage overflow from the Thames, is gradually coming online with full functionality expected by 2025.

The new 25km super sewer, in conjunction with the existing 7km Lee Tunnel, boasts a combined capacity of 1.6 million cubic meters—equivalent to 640 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Early data shows that during a single day of heavy rainfall in September 2024, the system captured 589,000 cubic meters of wastewater, significantly reducing the harmful sewage discharged into the Thames. Once fully operational, this project will virtually eliminate sewage pollution in central London, providing a healthier environment for both wildlife and residents.

The £4.5bn Thames Tideway project involved constructing more than 20 deep shafts across London, some as wide as St. Paul’s Cathedral, to accommodate the tunneling machines. Delivered by a coalition of tier-one contractors, the project’s completion represents a significant milestone for London’s infrastructure. The super sewer not only protects the river but also integrates public spaces, enhancing London’s riverside areas for future generations.
