2018 Tragedy Remembered: Fuego Volcano Eruption Forces Evacuations

Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano, one of the most active in the world, erupted once again, spewing gas, ash, and molten rock into the sky. The eruption, which began overnight, has forced nearly 300 families to evacuate, with authorities warning that 30,000 more could be at risk. Located just 60 kilometers from Guatemala City, Fuego’s eruptions are frequent, but the true danger lies in lahars—deadly torrents of mud, ash, and debris that can engulf entire villages.

At 3,763 meters high, Fuego has erupted continuously, with its last major event in June 2023. However, memories of 2018, when 194 people were killed and 234 went missing, haunt local communities. Residents recall the destruction and have fled to emergency shelters, fearing history may repeat itself.

Authorities have shut down schools and key roads, while airline operations face disruptions due to volcanic ash reaching 7,000 meters in the sky. The National Institute of Seismology warns that volcanic activity may intensify, and disaster agencies are urging more residents to evacuate immediately.
