2013 Moore tornado

A large and extremely violent EF5 tornado ravaged through Moore, Oklahoma, and adjacent areas. The peak winds estimated at 210 mph (340 km/h), killing 24 people (plus two indirect fatalities) and injuring 212 others.

2012 Northern Italy earthquakes

Two major earthquakes struck Northern Italy, causing 27 deaths and widespread damage. The first of the two occurred 36 kilometers north of Bologma, at the Emilia-Romagna region. It had a magnitude of 6.1 and led to seven deaths. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the same area nine days later, on 29 May, causing an additional twenty deaths and widespread damage, particularly to buildings already weakened by the 20 May earthquake.

Metrorail (Miami-Dade County) opened

Florida's only rapid transit metro system, Metrorail serves the urban core of Miami. It consists of two lines, 23 stations and has a length of 24.4 mi (39.3 km).

Osaka Metro opened

Serving the city of Osaka, Japan, the Osaka Metro is a major rapid transit system that is an integral part of the extensive mass transit system of Greater Osaka. Despite having the full features of a subway system, it is the only subway system in Japan that is legally classified not as a railway, but as a tramway.

1883 eruption of Krakatoa

One of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history, the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa began on 20 May 1883. The volcano exploded three months later, killing more than 36,000 people. Over 70% of the island of Krakatoa and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed as it collapsed into a caldera.
